The peafowl was named the national bird of India in 1963.  The peacock was the perfect bird for this because it is a very common bird that is well known in India.  It is also found all over the country.  Not only is it well known, but the peacock has deep ties to religious views and Indian myths.
Indian mythology has the peacock as the vehicle of Lord Karthikeya.  Lord Karthikeya is a Hindu deity.  With all the magnificent coloring of this amazing bird, it’s not surprise that a culture rich in traditions and colors would select such an vibrant bird as their national bird.
